The history of Shimizu Port

The history of Shimizu Port dates back as far as the 600s, and there are records that relief ships to Baekje departed from the port. From the 1500s to the 1700s, the port was used by the shogunate as a strategic military base and as a trading post on land and sea.
The dawn of Shimizu Port as a modern port began with its designation as an open port on August 4, 1899. The opening of the port coincided with the advent of steam engines and the modernization of industry. Starting with the direct export of tea, citrus fruits, canned foods, motorcycles, musical instruments, and other products from Shizuoka Prefecture and other neighboring regions, the port area and functions expanded as the industrialization of the waterfront area progressed.
In addition, the port was quick to respond to container transport in response to the demands of the times, and has grown to become one of the leading export ports in Japan. At the same time, as an import port for lumber, soybeans, bauxite, and other raw materials, it has supported the economy of the prefecture and the central Japan region, playing an important role in Japan’s period of rapid economic growth.
